چکیده

The capabilities and advantages of laser scanners used for structural engineering applications to monitor and assess structural damage in laboratory tests and post-earthquake field survey are discussed. High definition laser scans have many advantages over conventional instrumentation as follows: (1) they capture three dimensional global deformations of large objects with accuracy, (2) they allow access to objects without spatial constraint and remote assessment by scanning from a distance, and (3) they reduce need for installing instruments in hard-to-reach locations and places with compromised safety. This paper summarizes results of the laser scanning research conducted at the University of California at Berkeley’s experimental site of the network for earthquake engineering simulation (NEES) in the past eight years. The laser scan data are compared with data from conventional position transducers to validate the approach and estimate accuracy of measurements. Several case studies are presented to demonstrate advantages and limitations of laser scanning technique. The paper also covers the first attempt of use of high-definition laser scanning technology in field surveys for structural damage assessment in the aftermath of the January 2010 Haiti earthquake. Damage assessment was performed for several structures and building blocks using the scans and the results were compared to qualitative results of visual ground survey. The techniques of gathering and disseminating critical information employed in this study is expected to have major impact on future field investigations of structures after earthquakes and become one of the means towards “instrumented cities.” This is shown at the end of this paper by an application involving recently conducted condition assessment of historical buildings in Uzbekistan. Probabilistic Assessment of Earthquake Damage and Loss for the City of Tehran, Iran

Tehran is one of the densely populated metropolises located in earthquake-prone regions. Tehran, the population of which surpasses 8 million people, is the most populated area in Iran. There are historical evidences confirming that catastrophic earthquakes have destroyed the city in past years. In the present paper, our study covers all parts of Tehran because there is the potential of signific...

Earthquake Evaluation of the Non Structural Elements in a Thermal Power Plant

Non Structural elements such as mechanical, electrical and architectural elements always posses serious damage potentials during earthquakes. Degree of damage imposed by the non structural elements is not usually measured by the physical damages caused, but more so by the amount of the economical and functional disruptions created in a built environment. This phenomenon is enhanced where the fu...

Stochastic analysis of two adjacent structures subjected to structural pounding under earthquake excitation

Seismic pounding occurs as a result of lateral vibration and insufficient separation distance between two adjacent structures during earthquake excitation. This research aims to evaluate the stochastic behavior of adjacent structures with equal heights under earthquake-induced pounding. For this purpose, many stochastic analyses through comprehensive numerical simulations are carried out. About...

Evaluation of 2D concentrically braced frames with cylindrical dampers subjected to near-field earthquake ground motions

Near field earthquakes have imposed major damage to buildings in the past years. In some cases, the intensity of such damage is too considerable to be disregarded. The most effective way to improve seismic performance of buildings is applying a seismic control technique. The cylindrical friction damper is one of these methods, which has become popular for its desirable performance in the energy...
